Harry Walls, campus pastor at The 91ɫ��Ƭ91ɫ��Ƭ University, sometimes uses humor to make a point.

For instance, when describing the volatility of the past year, Walls says there91ɫ��Ƭ one beatitude Christians often overlook. “Blessed are the flexible,” he says.

The virtue has certainly been required of Walls and many others across TMU91ɫ��Ƭ campus who have had to adjust on the fly more than once during the past 10 months. Through it all, the focus has been on maintaining a safe environment while continuing to equip students for lives of faithfulness to Christ and Scripture.

That focus will also govern the 2021 Truth & Life Conference, scheduled for February 2 and 3 at Grace Community Church. Attendance at TMU91ɫ��Ƭ annual spring Bible conference will be limited to the school91ɫ��Ƭ student body this year. But each preaching session – featuring speakers Dr. John MacArthur, Dr. Sam Horn and Costi Hinn – will be live streamed at www.masters.edu/live.

MacArthur will kick things off Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. PST. And Hinn – an Arizona pastor who formerly worked with his uncle (world-famous televangelist Benny Hinn) before rejecting the prosperity gospel – will follow with a pair of messages at 11 and 2:30.

Horn, TMU91ɫ��Ƭ president, will preach in the finale on Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. Shane & Shane will lead worship at all four sessions.

The theme of the conference will be “The Gospel: The Truth that Saves and the Deceptions that Damn.” Walls, who also serves as TMU91ɫ��Ƭ vice president of student life, doesn’t believe anyone will want to miss out on such a foundational and relevant topic.

“For Christians living in a culture of social media, virtual sermons and podcasts with a lot of wolves in sheep’s clothing today, this will help sensitize them to what is competing with the message that saves and what is taking people down the broad road of destruction,” he says.

The event91ɫ��Ƭ speakers are both familiar and new to the conference.

When Horn stepped into the role of president at TMU in 2020, he brought with him decades of experience in higher education. But he also possesses a pastoral background and a passion for training men and women for gospel ministry, a heart shared by his predecessor, MacArthur, who transitioned to chancellor emeritus after more than 30 years as president.

MacArthur – an accomplished author, conference speaker and the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church – is no stranger to the Truth & Life stage. “He gives such a clarion voice to not only the truths that God has revealed,” Walls says, “but also the clarity of perspective on our culture and the need for the gospel to be proclaimed clearly and courageously.”

As for Hinn, he is a pastor at Redeemer Bible Church in Gilbert, Ariz., and the author of “God, Greed, and the (Prosperity) Gospel,” a work influenced by the time he spent engaged in his uncle Benny91ɫ��Ƭ crusades. Having rejected the prosperity gospel, Costi earned a master91ɫ��Ƭ degree in theology from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His presence at Truth & Life underscores the conference91ɫ��Ƭ focus.

Says TMU Dean of Campus Life Jonny Ardavanis: “The most important thing for a dying world is nothing else but an accurate understanding and surrender to the gospel.”

Ardavanis says the point of examining the differences between the good news contained in the pages of Scripture and the distortions offered by the world is not so that TMU students can “point fingers at the rest of the world.” Instead, it91ɫ��Ƭ to reinforce and challenge their own understanding.

“Sometimes if a student grows up hearing God is holy, without love, then the student doesn’t understand the love of God at all,” Ardavanis says. “And we can’t love God until we first know His love. And then other students might grow up in an environment only hearing about God’s love and never understanding His holiness, which means they don’t fear God properly. Once students have an accurate understanding of the gospel, they’re going to be equipped and fueled and motivated to go into a dying world and live for Christ.”

More than anything, Ardavanis hopes the conference infuses a love for God and his Word and a burden for the lost into the hearts of TMU91ɫ��Ƭ students – and those watching online.

“I want people to come away fired up about what God is doing in their own life and fired up about the ways that God can use them,” he says.
